Indiana Pharmacy Teaching Certificate Program (IPTeC)
Course Description
The primary goal of the program is to provide pharmacy residents, graduate students, and fellows with an opportunity to enhance their teaching skills. The program consists of didactic seminars, teaching experience, and the development of a teaching portfolio.
Didactic Seminars:
A total of ten 2-hour seminars will be offered. Each seminar is designed to provide the learner with distinct set of knowledge about different issues surrounding pharmacy education. Learning outcomes for each seminar will be assessed
via administration of post-seminar quizzes developed by each seminar speaker.
Teaching Experience:
Resident participants will be required to perform at least two 60-minute lectures either as a classroom lecture or part of a CE program. Additional experience of at least 15 hours of other teaching activities such as precepting students, facilitating small-group case discussions, and acting as a TA will also be required to be documented using a teaching experience log.
Teaching experiences will be assessed by the resident’s primary preceptor using standardized evaluation forms which will be archived in the resident’s teaching portfolio.
Teaching Portfolio:
Resident participants will develop a teaching portfolio that includes their teaching philosophy. The portfolio will act as a dynamic record of teaching experiences in which the participants should keep teaching log, evaluations from preceptors and students, examples of materials provided during their teaching experiences, and self-assessments of each teaching experience.
Teaching portfolios will be assessed by university faculty at the end of the academic year using a standardized evaluation form.
Formal Presentation
Resident participants will develop a 15-minute “How-To” presentation regarding a non-pharmacy related topic. This activity fosters application of learning principles promoted during the didactic seminars. Presentations will be assessed by IPTeC program coordinators, whom are all active faculty members with Purdue and Butler Universities.
