Amy Sheehan

Amy Heck Sheehan, Pharm.D.

Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice

Professor Sheehan's practice site is the Clarian Health Partner’s Drug Information Service located at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where she is directly involved with the provision of comprehensive drug information services for Indiana University Hospital, Riley Children's Hospital, and Methodist Hospital. Professor Sheehan is Co-Coordinator of the Purdue University & Eli Lilly and Company Specialized Drug Information Residency and the Purdue University & Clarian Health Partners Specialized Drug Information Residency, and serves as course coordinator for CLPH 567, "Principles of Drug Information and Literature Evaluation". She also serves as co-director of the Indiana Pharmacy Resident Teaching Certificate (IPTeC) Program. Professor Sheehan's research interests include evaluation of formal drug information services, development of novel teaching strategies, and obesity management.

Professor Sheehan has published peer-reviewed articles in the pharmacy literature and authored book chapters for therapeutics and drug information textbooks. Professor Sheehan is a member of the Indiana College of Clinical Pharmacy, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. She currently serves as a referee the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy, and is a member of the Editorial Board for the Annals of Pharmacotherapy.

Deanna Kania

Deanna S. Kania, Pharm.D., BCPS

Clinical Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice

Dr. Kania's clinical practice site is located at the R.L. Roudebush VA Medical Center and primarily involves ambulatory care. In conjunction with Dr. Ronnie Weathermon, formerly with Purdue University, and Dr. Kristine Keplar, from Butler University, Dr. Kania has established a Primary Care Pharmacy Anticoagulation Service which is now in its seventh year and continues to expand. Dr. Kania also participates in a HIV clinic, assisting in the optimization of drug therapies and the improvement of patient education and compliance. She also receives referrals from physicians to assist with the education and therapeutic management of diabetic patients. Dr. Kania's research efforts focus on the establishment of clinical pharmacy services in a VA setting and on the clinical outcomes for both the pharmacy anticoagulation and HIV clinics. Her other interest areas include cardiovascular pharmacology and therapeutics. Dr. Kania also assists in the teaching of the medication portion of the ACLS training course.

Dr. Kania is a member of the American Society of Health System Pharmacists and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, where she is also a PRN member for ambulatory care. Dr. Kania serves on the educational council for the Indiana Pharmacists Association, where she is an active member.

Dr. Kania is married with two children, Alaina and Alex. In her spare time between work and raising her family, she is a part-time wedding coordinator at her church, sings in a choir, and is an active participant in a theatre group, currently serving as its President and Dance Captain.

Steve Abel

Steven R. Abel, Pharm.D., FASHP

Professor of Pharmacy Practice

Professor Abel's research focuses on development, implementation and evaluation of progressive pharmaceutical services in organized health care systems. He has extensive experience in tracking the types and frequency of clinical services provided in different inpatient pharmacy practice models (centralized, decentralized, multidisciplinary patient focused care teams). He has assessed services based upon their impact on patient care and cost. Other primary areas of interest include medication safety, strategies to improve medication management/ medication use and ocular pharmacology.

Professor Abel has published more than 110 scientific and professional articles and has given more than 300 research and invited presentations at national and international pharmacy meetings. He has a history of active service in various pharmaceutical organizations including the Indiana Pharmacists Alliance, American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, American College of Clinical Pharmacists and American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. In 1995, he was selected as a Fellow of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

NICHOLAS G. POPOVICH, Professor and Head

Research Interests:
Development, implementation, and evaluation of educational methodologies to enhance pharmacy student and pharmacist knowledge, learning and confidence in knowledge and assessment of student development of performance-based abilities (e.g., logical thinking/decision-making abilities, reading and critical thinking abilities, scholarly concern for improvement and lifelong learning) in the professional curriculum. Development, implementation, and evaluation of interdisciplinary learning methodologies and innovative strategies to enhance professional student career planning.

Other Experiences:
Of his educationally-anchored research articles which have appeared in the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education, five have won the Rufus A. Lyman Award presented annually by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) for the most outstanding article published for the year. While at
Purdue University, Dr. Popovich received the Professor Henry Heine Award, presented annually to the outstanding teacher in the School of Pharmacy, five times, and in 1986, received the campus-wide, Purdue University Amoco Foundation Undergraduate Teaching Award. In July 1997, he was honored as the AACP Distinguished Pharmacy Educator and served as its President and Chairman of the Board 1991-1992. While at Purdue University, he was a founding fellow of the Teaching Academy in September, 1997, is listed on the University's Book of Great Teachers, and served as the Co-Chairman of the Teaching Academy Executive Council until December, 2001. The mission of the Academy is to provide leadership and serve as a catalyst to enhance and strengthen the quality of undergraduate, graduate, and outreach teaching and learning.

Butler Assignment

Teaches in the therapeutics courses offered within the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at Butler University. She also serves as a clinical instructor for students on rotation during the last year of the curriculum. Clinical courses taught include general medicine, advanced general medicine, ambulatory care, and advanced ambulatory care.
